'Treacherous' roads blamed in deadly crash near Manhattan

MANHATTAN (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Road conditions were "treacherous" Saturday afternoon when Keyshanna Lucas, 20, lost control of the Dodge car she was driving and slid into oncoming traffic in the southwest suburbs, police said.

Sharquece Baker, 16, a front-seat passenger in the four-door vehicle, died on the scene, the Southtown Star is reporting.

Lucas died at 2:38 p.m. after being taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, authorities said.

Another passenger, Dyjon Abbott, 19, also was taken to Silver Cross, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday. All three occupants were from Joliet.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Scott Angus said Lucas was southbound on U.S. 52 south of Cedar Road near Manhattan about 1:10 p.m. when snowy road conditions caused her to slide into a northbound Ford truck.

Mark Trost, the driver of the truck, said he and his wife, Kris, were not injured in the crash.

"They came out of the corner and got squirelly sideways and came right into my truck," Trost said. "It's a shame."

Angus said snow made road conditions slippery Saturday, causing several accidents and some cars to end up in ditches.

"The roads were pretty treacherous," Angus said.

The driver was wearing a seat belt, but the front-seat passenger was not, state police said.

State police, the Manhattan and New Lenox fire districts, Manhattan police and Manhattan emergency services responded to the scene. The intersection of Cedar Road and U.S. 52 is at an S-curve south of Manhattan and north of Wilton Center.
