A man charged with murder in connection with an armed robbery turned deadly last month in northwest suburban Bensenville was ordered held on a $2.5 million bond Wednesday.

Kenneth Bardlett, 20, of Bellwood, was charged Tuesday with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted armed robbery, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

Judge Jeff McKay ordered Bardlett held on $2.5 million Wednesday.

Bardlett and at least one accomplice encountered clerk Hussein Saghir outside Sam's Tobacco and Food Mart at 235 W. Irving Park Rd. in Bensenville on Jan. 19 as he was leaving for the evening, prosecutors allege.

After a brief altercation, Saghir was shot, prosecutors allege. He was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the state's attorney's office.

"The Bensenville Police Department and the Major Crimes Task Force will continue to investigate this cold-blooded murder until all parties responsible have been held accountable," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement.

Bardlett is scheduled for arraignment March 10 in Wheaton.
