Job Shop: Getting more out of your work experience

Whether it be expanding a skill set, achieving better work/life balance or getting in shape, many professionals are ringing in 2014 with a New Year's resolution.

The good news? Workers may have an ally in their employers who can help them achieve these goals.

According to a new survey from staffing firm Accountemps, employers plan to offer a number of perks this year to improve morale and promote workplace wellness. Topping the list are subsidized training and education, flexible work hours/telecommuting, mentoring programs, free or subsidized snacks or lunches, and subsidized gym memberships:

How can individuals make their  2014 work place resolutions stick?

· Be specific. Many people make the mistake of making their resolution too broad, like "improve my skills." By being more specific - stating the specific skills you'd like to improve, how much you'd like to improve them, how you intend to improve them, and by when, you're creating a clear roadmap for achieving your goal.

· Make the resolutions realistic. While it's great to have ambitions for the corner office, if you're currently an intern, it isn't feasible to make this a resolution for the current year. It might be better for your 10-year career plan, instead.

· Don't bite off more than you can chew. While it's great to have multiple goals, it's best to narrow your focus to one or two important ones to improve your chances of sticking to them.  

· Find a partner. By sharing your goals with another person, you're more likely to achieve them because you'll be held accountable. Find someone who's also setting resolutions (a colleague, friend, spouse, family member) and help them achieve theirs, as well, by checking in on progress.
