ATLANTA, Ga. -

The start of the year is a great time to recharge and recommit to a healthy lifestyle. Between balancing busy lifestyles and balancing our budgets, it's sometimes hard to know which things are most necessary.

2014 MUST-DO MEDICAL CHECKLIST FOR WOMEN

  • WHAT DOCTORS SHOULD WE BE SEEING EVERY YEAR?

Who we see should really come down to what things are most likely to threaten our health. For women, our goal should be prevention of HEART DISEASE and early detection of CANCERS.

  1. INTERNIST, FAMILY PRACTITIONER OR GYNECOLOGIST for cervical cancer screening and ordering your mammography
  2. INTERNIST OR FAMILY PRACTITIONER for assessment of heart disease risk, other preventive tests, and management of chronic diseases like hypertension or diabetes
  3. DENTIST for oral health maintenance -- very important and even linked to heart disease
  • WHAT THINGS SHOULD WOMEN MAKE SURE THEY'RE GETTING?
  1. CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING (PAP TEST) ~ every 3 years in most, every 5 with HPV test
  2. MAMMOGRAM ~ age varies, discuss with your doctor
  3. COLON CANCER SCREENING ~ every 10 years for 50 and older
  4. FLU SHOT
  5. BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING
  6. CHOLESTEROL SCREENING
  7. FASTING BLOOD SUGAR
  8. HIV TEST
  9. WEIGHT AND BODY MASS INDEX
  10. COUNSELING ON ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO USE
  11. DEPRESSION SCREENING
  • ARE THERE ANY OTHER THINGS THAT PEOPLE SHOULD DO BUT OFTEN GET MISSED?
  1. PNEUMONIA VACCINE for women and men over 65
  2. ZOSTER (SHINGLES) VACCINE for women over 60
  3. BONE MINERAL DENSITY TEST for women over 65 or specific health reasons
  4. HEPATITIS C SCREENING for women born between 1945 - 1965
  5. THYROID FUNCTION

One of the best things we can all do is have a relationship with a primary care provider and be honest. Your internal medicine doctor (doctors for grown-ups) or your family practitioner are excellent options to get all of these things done at one place. When your doctor knows you, they can compare changes and note small changes easier. Make this the day you make your appointment.
