BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – Congressman Bill Keating says the Russians will be deploying a massive amount of security personnel, including 40,000 police officers and 30,000 military units. And they'll be spending tens of millions of dollars to protect the Sochi Olympic Games, but will it be enough in the wake of mounting terror threats?
Keating estimates up to 15,000 Americans will be attending the Olympics, and despite the Russians' security measures Keating says, he has serious concerns. Keating, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, wrapped up his second tour of Russia in a year.
With the Sochi Olympics just weeks away, Keating is urging any American planning to watch the games in Sochi, to be extremely cautious.
"It is a concern. Lets' face it. When there's three, you know, suicide bombing attempts, when you know there's going to be those efforts. I think you could do well, if someone wants to go there I think your chances of being secure and safe are enhanced greatly by being vigilant, by listening to what the experts, our experts, our countries' experts are saying and adhering to that," Keating said.
Keating has also visited Russia, to find out what happened when Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev visited the troubled north caucuses a year before the bombings. Keating believes Tsarnaev met well known radicals in the area trying to join the insurgency against the Russians, but Tsarnaev was rebuffed, and returned to Boston where Keating says, Tsarnaev carried out the marathon bombing without help from anyone in Russia.
"There is no new information in terms of what I got from the sources this time, they would lead us to believe that it was actually ordered, as you said, from that area," he said.
The information they have remains, Tsarnaev was acting by himself, not by those linkages, Keating said.
The House Homeland Security Committee's report on the Boston bombings is due in the next few weeks.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev's brother, Dzhokhar, is awaiting trial. It will soon be announced if the feds will seek the death penalty against him.
