Tablet taken by so-called 'thieving grandmother' returned

Posted: Updated:

BURLINGTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Burlington police recovered a tablet computer believed to be taken by a woman now being called "the thieving grandmother."

The tablet was recovered after police posted surveillance video of the theft on their website.

Video of the alleged theft shows an older woman bringing food to a table inside a Burlington Panera Bread during lunch. When a younger woman points to a tablet that's been left behind, the older woman can be seen picking it up, taking a chair from another table, and putting the tablet on the chair. She then put her purse on top of the computer before eventually putting it into her purse.

The victim told the Boston Herald that the suspect looked like a "grandma" and that the theft was "despicable." She also recognized the suspect's bag to be Vera Bradley, which is the same brand as the victim's tablet cover.

Once police posted the video on their website Tuesday, the device was returned. According to the Herald, it wasn't returned by the people seen in the surveillance video. Police expect the alleged suspect will be summonsed in the case.
