Suspect held on high bail after stealing $2 from woman at subway station

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A man was held on high bail at arraignment Thursday accused of pushing a woman to the ground and stealing $2 from her at a subway station Jan. 6.

Police said Raymond Castillo, 34, approached a 37-year-old woman from behind at a Boston subway station wearing a black mask in early January. He allegedly told her that he had a gun and demanded money. When she refused to give him cash, he shoved her to the ground, climbed on top of her and went through her pockets, officials say.

The suspect took $2 from the woman and fled the area. He was followed by two people, who were not successful in catching him.

MBTA transit police responded and began an investigation. After watching surveillance footage they discovered that a woman unknowingly assisted the suspect by switching jackets with him and storing his backpack inside of hers following the robbery.

After the public was able to see the footage, via the media, police received a tip that eventually led them to Castillo. Police also identified and interviewed the woman Castillo worked with, but say that the evidence does not suggest that she knew about Castillo's plans to commit the robbery or planned to help him afterward.

Castillo is being charged with armed robbery and assault and battery. He is due in court on Feb. 21.
