Family of four escapes East Point house fire

EAST POINT, Ga. -

A family of four is lucky to be alive after an overnight fire destroyed their East Point home.

The fire started on the 2700 block of Hayden Drive around midnight.

According to a spokesperson with East Point Fire, a couple and their children and grandchildren lived in the home. The home has been in their family for over 40 years. officials say the entire family escaped the fire without injury.

The husband, a brain cancer survivor, saved his wife from the fire by, reportedly, carrying her out of the burning home. Apparently, the wife was nursing an ankle injury at the time of the fire.

Renita T. Shelton of East Point Fire says the home has been declared a total loss; and that the family had canceled their insurance due to the husband's brain cancer battle.

Authorities do not know what caused the fire but witnesses, on the scene, suspect it started in the basement.

This fire is still under investigation, at this time.
