Snowiest January on record draining snow budgets

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

We broke a record Saturday. The Detroit area has its snowiest January on record with 31.5 inches of snow. The previous record was 29.6 inches, set in Jan. 1978. The snowy season is taxing road crews and draining snow budgets.

State Police say this weekend alone they've responded to upwards of 70 spinouts and crashes. Between the cost of salt, overtime and vehicle maintenance, road commissions are spending more cash than they care to count. Oakland County says the last storm that dropped 12 inches of snow cost about $3 million.

The cold, costly, brutal winter will make for a rough ride this summer. If snow funds run out, they'll have to borrow from summer maintenance funds to cover the looming shortfall. Crews have been working non-stop and there's more snow and bitter cold in the forecast.

Oakland County has used up about 75% of its winter budget so far. In Wayne County, they've spent about $7 million of the $8 million allotted. Macomb County has used about 80% of its funds.
