Cold Prompts Class Cancellations, Chill Warnings

PHILADELPHIA -

Authorities across Pennsylvania are making preparations and asking residents to conserve energy as bone-chilling temperatures descend on the commonwealth.

The National Weather Service has issued wind chill warnings and advisories in many parts of Pennsylvania and says temperatures will be coldest in western parts of the state, falling to 5 to 15 degrees below zero Tuesday with highs in the low single digits.

School districts including Erie, Pittsburgh, Beaver Area, Sharon and Penn Hills canceled classes Tuesday, as did the Penn State Shenango campus.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley was in Camden County, NJ where he jokes that mother nature should be charged with felony assault.

Valley Forge, Pa.-based PJM Interconnection urged residents to conserve electricity, especially in the morning and evening, to ensure service.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) says they have more personnel on hand and says restricted speeds will be in effect for trains and trolleys with overhead power lines.
