New York City? I'd Much Rather Live In LA

Posted: Updated:

Having spent a week in New York City in a hotel room so small I had to go out in the hall to change my mind (apologies to Catskills comedians), I can tell you I'd much rather live in LA.

Check our more Super Bowl coverage from Phil Shuman here.

Which is why I do.

I mean I don't like sitting on that !@#$$%^ 405 freeway any more than the next stressed out commuter, but I'll take that over sitting FOREVER  in a cab in clogged, jammed, noisy, smelly, and today, slushy and sloppy streets of Manhattan.  Yes you can get Chinese food at 4 in the morning here if you so desire, but why would you?

Manhattan, and New York City in general does have an incredible buzz, an energy, that LA (or most cities) will never achieve. Broadway and the Theatre District puts LA to shame, but it's almost overwhelming.  From the sidewalks to the bikes to the taxis to the police to the horse drawn carriages to the never ending salesman hawking everything from their own CD's to Justin Bieber framed photo collages ($20 dollars, no wait $ 15 if you walk away), it's like an assault on your senses, everywhere, all day, and how would you like a five dollar fake pashmina with that?  And can you please help the homeless but putting money in this plastic jar I've set up on the sidewalk?

Okay, I get it. It's NYC!!!

Give me the ocean, maybe a coffee shop in Larchmont,  Balboa Peninsula, Santa Barbara, even the Criminal Courts building  in downtown Los Angeles (omg) is friendlier than a lot of places here in the Apple.  Now, having said that, I have yet to experience NYC "above street level" so to speak.

If you're Howard Stern (who had a huge 60th birthday bash here Friday night) or any one of a number of anonymous millionaires and billionaires for whom NYC is a series of limos and helicopters and private jets and penthouse condos and sleek corporate boardrooms and $100 entrees and personal shoppers and chefs and valets and who knows what else, now THAT would be interesting to try for a while.  But for the everyday guy or gal struggling to beat ‘‘the man'' the pace here can wear you out in a hurry.  So congrats to New Yorkers, a great place to visit, and you put on a really fun Super Bowl week party.  See you the next time, I'll send you a postcard from Malibu where I don't think it's snowing.

It's no secret that Microsoft has struggled in the hardware department so I can't say whether the Surface Pro 3 will be the hero Microsoft needs but I can say it is the modern computing experience users deserve. I love it and think you should too! Read on to find out why.
