64-year-old woman killed in Berwyn house fire

BERWYN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 64-year-old woman died in a Tuesday morning house fire in west suburban Berwyn that may have been caused by smoking materials.

A passerby saw flames coming from the front window of the home in the 2400 block of South Scoville Avenue a few minutes after 7 a.m. and called 911, Berwyn Fire Chief Denis O'Halloran said.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire in the living room, and found the woman still inside the one-and-a-half story bungalow, O'Halloran.

The fire was extinguished about 8 a.m., O'Halloran said. No one else was in the home at the time, and there were no other injuries.

Karen Lindsey was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:36 a.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. Though her home address was not released, O'Halloran said he believes she was a resident of the home.

An autopsy Wednesday found that Lindsey died because of careless use of smoking materials, carbon monoxide intoxication and inhalation of smoke and soot, the medical examiner's office said.

Fire officials could not provide more details about the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation Wednesday afternoon.
