A Mark Wahlberg Photo And The Message Behind It

Posted: Updated:

Mark Wahlberg. Shirtless. Ripped abs. Got the picture? Lynn Goldsmith did. The famed photographer showed off a shot of a young Walhberg when he was still Marky Mark of the Funky Bunch. She says that photo is among those that help illustrate her life story and frame her life message.  "Decide what your dream is and go after it."

I met Goldsmith when she was a guest on Studio11LA, our 5pm news showing off her new coffee table book.  If you don't know her you are sure to know her work. Her camera has documented days with everyone from Ozzy Osbourne, to Debbie Harry, to Michael Jackson, to The Beatles. Her album covers include the B52's, she dated Bruce Springsteen, and made her mark in magazines from Time to Rolling Stone. More importantly to me, and youth I work with, Goldsmith describes herself as self-made. Goldsmith says her photo of a young muscled Wahlberg speaks to the legacy behind her book "Rock and Roll Stories".

To say "She knew Wahlberg when" is an understatement. It's when the world referred to him as a rapper. Goldsmith met Wahlberg when he was quote "a juvenile delinquent recently out of prison." She says he is an example of what she wanted her life to stand for. She believes it doesn't matter what your background is or where you came from.

ContactMusic.com: Wahlberg was sentenced to two years imprisonment - of which he served 45 days - after he pleaded guilty to assault when he was just 16. Wahlberg called jail a ''wake-up call.''

Wonder what he'd say if you asked Wahlberg if he ever imagined he'd become one of the world's greatest superstars? He acts in comedies like Ted and dramas like Lone Survivor. He produced series like Entourage and now stars in his own family's reality show. Goldsmith exclaims Wahlberg "Didn't even have a high school diploma!" She believes "your level of education matters, but not to the degree it can stop you."

I write this blog for the young people I work with through Wednesday's Child, which showcases kids from foster care. I meet way too many kids who might not feel book smart, but are certainly creative and talented. Let this be a lesson for them to believe in the impossible. While we might never reach the fame and fortune of Mark Wahlberg, or Lynn Goldsmith, we can at least be inspired and live with passion and drive. Of course, Wahlberg got his start riding the coattails of his brother Donnie who was in New Kids On The Block. That too, is its own success story! Read about it. It's in her book!
