Police: Firearms, books about serial killers recovered at site of Dartmouth standoff

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Dartmouth police say they recovered several firearms and books about serial killers after a standoff with a suspect who allegedly threatened to "shoot up" Roger Williams University in Rhode Island.

Officials executed a search warrant Wednesday morning at the Richard Street home where an eight-hour standoff ended with the arrest of 36-year-old Kevin Pacheco.

Pacheco's cousin spoke moments after he was arrested and said he was unstable since his mother died 14-years-ago.

"I can say Kevin needs help, but he's a good person. I never believed Kevin would do this, never in my entire life," she said.

During the search, investigators reportedly recovered firearms, ammunition, computers, books about becoming a serial killer, and books about manufacturing methamphetamine.

Neighbors were shocked to hear what was found.

"That's mind blowing 'cause, I don't know, that's least expected coming from this neighborhood. Pretty much around here, there's not really much that goes on so for something that big to happen, its just crazy," a neighbor said.

"It was like a scene from a movie, really, it really was," Maria Ventura, mother of a neighborhood woman, said.

Pacheco surrendered Tuesday evening after police told him they were going to cut off power to the house.

In an e-mail to students and staff, Roger Williams administrators said "a small group of faculty and administrators at RWU Law received an email from a former law school student that included threatening language" on Tuesday morning.

The e-mail went on to state that the student was believed to be in an apartment in South Dartmouth and that "out of an abundance of caution," the Bristol police would remain an active presence on campus until the suspect was in custody.

Pacheco is being evaluated at a St. Luke's Hospital and is awaiting arraignment on charges out of Massachusetts that include extortion and threats.
