BATAVIA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A firefighter was injured after he slipped on ice while battling a house fire in west suburban Friday in the frigid temperatures Friday.

Firefighters responded at around 5:30 p.m. Friday to 332 Evergreen Drive, where they found fire in the crawl space and smoke on the first floor of a home, the Beacon News reports.

One person at home at the time of the fire evacuated safely from the one-story house located on the city's west side off of Main Street.

Firemen prevented the blaze from spreading through the floors and walls. The firefighter injured on the scene suffered a lower back strain when he fell on ice. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and released.

Fire officials said the fire caused $15,000 in damage to the structure and $1,000 damage to contents. The structural damage was primarily to the floor joists, flooring and walls.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but fire officials are looking at the boiler heating system as a possible source.
