Man pleads guilty-but-mentally-ill in 2011 strangulation

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Hammond man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to voluntary manslaughter in a 2011 strangulation, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Lumaz Thompson, 25, faces a minimum 25-year sentence in the death of Denise Collier, 54.

Collier's decomposed body was found on June 7, 2011, in an apartment in the 6100 block of Harrison Avenue in Hammond. Police and the Lake County coroner's office found a pieced of cloth wrapped tightly around her neck, with a knot tied behind her neck.

Thompson claimed he had paid to have sex with Collier and that a heated argument ensued in which he choked her so tightly that he lifted her "off her toes," court documents state, then tied her with her skirt around her neck and killed her.

The homicide occurred between June 1, 2011, when a neighbor told police she'd last seen Collier, and June 7, 2011, when police made entry into her building and found her on the living room floor and the apartment in disarray.

One of the mental health professionals who evaluated Thompson found that he had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, mood disorder ad oppositional defiant disorder. An evaluation by a second mental health professional found that Thompson did not meet the criteria for insanity but did meet criteria for mentally ill, as defined by state law.

Thompson had faced 45 to 65 years on the original murder charge. Voluntary manslaughter is punishable by 20 to 50 years.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for March 27 before Lake Superior Court Judge Clarence Murray.
