CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An Edgewater man was ordered held on $30,000 bond after police found nearly 50 marijuana plants growing in his North Side apartment.

Brian Mayhall, 39, was charged with one count of production of cannabis plants and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, both felonies, according to a release from Chicago police.

Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesil ordered Mayhall held on $30,000 bond Monday, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Stephen Campbell said. He will next appear in court March 5.

About 4 p.m. Sunday, the 20th district tactical officers acted on a tip from CAPS — Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy — at an apartment in the 5700 block of North Winthrop Avenue, police said.

Officers discovered "a strong smell of cannabis emanating from the apartment" and saw several plants when Mayhall opened his apartment door, police said.

Mayhall agreed to let the officers search the apartment, which resulted in the seizure of 49 cannabis plants and various lights, fans and grow tents in rooms from the apartment.

Police said the plants have an estimated street value of $350,000.
