NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A Key Food supermarket that opened to much excitement and big expectations in Newark a year ago has emptied its shelves and closed up shop, according to the Star-Ledger.

When the store opened, with speeches from then-Mayor Cory Booker and other officials, it was viewed as a much-needed necessity in a low-income neighborhood where residents are forced to do shopping in higher-priced corner groceries and convenience stores.

But the owner cited several problems that contributed to the supermarkets closing, including a long delay by the state in issuing a license to accept WIC food stamps, according to the report.

"That really hurt us," Ahmed said, according to NJ.com. "The WIC accounts for about 15 percent of business."
