35 animals rescued from illegal petting zoo

Posted: Updated:

LUDLOW, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Animal rescuers saved 35 cold, emaciated animals from an unlicensed petting zoo over the weekend.

Workers from both the Animal Rescue League and the MSPCA-Angell Animal Medical Center rescued the animals and brought 12 of them, including mini-donkeys, ponies, sheep and goats to the Animal Rescue League's shelter in Dedham to be taken care of.

Other animals, including pigs and alpacas were taken to the MSPCA's Nevins Farm in Methuen.

Ludlow resident Dean Manual, 43, who owned the animals, has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. He also faces additional charges including assaulting a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

A spokesperson for the Animal Rescue League of Boston said the animals were subject to cruel living conditions, and are now receiving proper hydration, nutrition and medical care.
