Riders report problems amidst CTA plans to be Ventra-only

A week after the CTA announced plans to transition to a "Ventra only" fare system some riders are still not satisfied.

The even say the system is still broken.

Some bus riders, even if they have money on their cards, find the cards don't work. Some have even been kicked off of the bus or train.

The Ventra transition has been a bumpy one, but one that CTA says it is working quickly to fix before the full Ventra takeover.

FOX 32's Lisa Chavarria spoke with one woman about what she says was a humiliating ordeal when she was kicked off a bus this weekend.

"I take the bus to work, I take it home, I take it to go visit friends," Ela Kus said.

That's why Ela Kus was surprised when she tapped her Ventra card to hop on the bus and it didn't work.

"So I tapped it again and tapped it again. I looked at the bus driver thinking, waiting for some feedback and essentially he just looked at me and he kind of shrugged," Kus said.

She sat down, but as more people boarded the bus on Clark Street their cards worked.

The driver asked her to try again.

"It wasn't registering at all. And he said I'm either going to have to ask you to pay the fare with cash or step off the bus," Kus said.

So she got off.

She's not alone.

A CTA spokesperson says several similar incidents have been reported over the past few weeks.

However, according to CTA reports 99 percent of Ventra equipment is functioning, processing Ventra taps takes 2.5 seconds or less and there is lower customer service wait times.

When Kus called customer service she says they were apologetic, but she still didn't understand why her card that had a 30 day pass on it would not work.

"Telling me that the card is sensitive to the winter cold, it's just not excusable," Kus said.

If getting kicked off the bus wasn't enough, Kus was told to purchase a new card and her 30 day pass, worth a $100, would be transferred over.

She later found out she was accidentally charged an 'extra' $100.
