Bridgewater man arrested in connection with robbery spree

Posted: Updated:

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Bridgewater man is accused of trying to rob two different businesses in less than half an hour.

Police received a 911 call Sunday stating that the KFC on Broad Street had been robbed.

Investigators say a white man wearing a gray hoodie and black ski mask pushed a female clerk, then punched a male clerk and got away with the cash register drawer.

While looking for the man, police received another call that someone attempted to rob Lucky Star Gas Station on Central Square. The suspect entered the gas station and demanded money while sticking a knife out, but the clerk took a large wooden stick from behind the counter and chased the man away.

A short while later, an East Bridgewater police officer helping search for the suspect found a man matching the suspect's description at the back of a nearby business. The man fled on foot, but police were able to catch up to him. They say he had a folding knife and black ski mask on him at the time.

Police arrested Matthew Nevergelt and charged him with one count of robbery, one count of attempted robbery, two counts of assault and battery and one count of resisting arrest.

Nevergelt was arraigned in Brockton District Court Monday.
