Prosecutor Kym Worthy: Ficano doesn't give a damn about public safety

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Wayne Co. Prosecutor Kym Worthy called a news conference Tuesday to announce charges in two high-profile cases, but she used part of her time at the podium to address the shortages her office is facing.

"We are really, really suffering. Seriously suffering," Worthy said.

She says the staff is down about 85 people, which is approaching about half of the staff. 75 of those people out are attorneys. She says prosecutors are backed up on more than 200 child abuse warrants, 40 homicide warrants and not-in-custody warrants are backed up almost six weeks.

When asked why the office is facing the shortages, she responded: "I treat it to a CEO who doesn't give a damn about public safety. Who gives it lip service and doesn't fund it."

Worthy says she balanced her budget for nine years until 2012 when her budget was slashed 28 percent.

"If the office cared about public safety, we would be funded appropriately. I shouldn't be turning into a fundraiser to try to fund this office," Worthy says.

Wayne County Executive Bob Ficano's office released a statement in response:

"We respect the court's directive to not discuss in the media, specific budget-related issues related to the pending litigation by the prosecutor. Nevertheless, public safety has and always will be a top priority for the County Executive as demonstrated by the $13.5 million increase in this year's appropriation for the Prosecutor and Sheriff when most other departments' budgets were cut."

Ficano also addressed the comments on FOX 2 News while detailing his proposed budget to eliminate the county's ailing debt.

Worthy has sued to receive proper funding for her office. That case is still in court.
