School Districts Struggle To Make Up Snow Days

Posted: Updated:

School Districts are blowing through snow days as fast as road crews and homeowners are going through rock salt. So schools are twisting their schedules around to make up those missed days from shortened spring breaks to classes on holidays to adding days at the end of the year.

The Centennial District in Lower Bucks County has already missed eight days this winter season due to snow and last week's ice storm and power outages that has put school administrators, parents and kids in a bit of a jam.

Students at William Tennent high school will be celebrating President's Day next Monday in the classroom.

It's the first of what may be many scheduled days off to be canceled, to make up for days lost to wicked winter weather.

"I always liked the snow days, but at this point it's getting to be a bit much."

First year District Superintendent Dr. Joyce Mundy says talks are already underway to take back at least two days from Spring Break, send kids to school on Election Day, and go beyond the usual June 18 end of school year.

"People will joke with you, when you become a superintendent, that the hardest calls that you have to make- the hardest decisions are weather related. It's sort of, within our circle," Mundy said. "The safety of students comes first."

Squeezing spring Break may cost some kids the down payment they've made on planned trips with their friends, but stretching the end of the year beyond June 18 presents its own problems.

'I know I have to go to Penn State for the summer program. So I have to leave by a certain date." Luke Judy, a

WTHS Student said. "Yeah, if they keep pushing it back, I lose days between the end of school and college."

Centennial schedules 183 school days each year, three more than the mandated minimum.

They could give several days back, but Dr. Mundy says that's a last resort and to think, snow day number 9 is an almost-sure thing come Thursday.
