Conn. blows through snow budget as storm arrives

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut is banning tandem tractor-trailer trucks from primary and secondary roads as a major winter storm reaches New England.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Wednesday the ban will take effect at 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

He said the state's emergency operations center will be activated at 6 a.m. Thursday to coordinate the state's response to the storm.

The governor also said the state will delay opening offices until 10 a.m. for nonessential state employees. Malloy said officials may announce at 8 a.m. or so if offices will remain closed for the day, depending on how the storm shapes up.

Connecticut has already spent all the money it budgeted for snow and ice removal, forcing officials to shift money from various accounts to pay for plow trucks and the workers who run them.

Troopers and the sheriff's offices in neighboring Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties received reports of at least eight burglaries starting late last week. Police say the items stolen included cash, two safes and musical equipment. Most of the stolen items have been recovered.
