Detroit Land Bank pushing to sue owners of abandoned properties

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit Land Bank was at the City Council meeting Thursday seeking permission to start suing owners of abandoned properties.

Kevin Simowski says the Land Bank hopes to start filing lawsuits in the next few weeks at a rate of 50 per week. The lawsuits will require owners to make repairs to their property or turn it over to the Land Bank.

The program implemented by the prosecutor's office under Mike Duggan's authority more than a decade ago showed signs of success.

"We filed over 3,000 lawsuits. We had, I think, two contested hearings, so it's a pretty good success rate," Simowski tells FOX 2's Amy Lange.

About 80,000 homes and businesses are estimated to be abandoned and blighted in Detroit.
