Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Robocop, and Other Love Stories

Posted: Updated:

Hope you loved the 80's because this weekend's big new releases are a blast from the past. Matt Atchity says out of the three remakes hitting theaters this weekend (RoboCop, About Last Night, and Endless Love) only one actually improves on the original.

"RoboCop" is a PG-13 retelling of an R-rated (originally X-rated) action flick many think is a classic and should not have been remade. Matt says critics that like it aren't really that passionate about it.

"Critics are split on this one. It's okay, it's not great...the supporting cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton) goes a long way to help this movie. The critics that like this say that this movie is better than they expected it was gonna be, the ones that don't like it say it still doesn't hold a candle to the original."

The reviews for "About Last Night" are pretty good...with some actually saying this one does it much better than the Rob Lowe version.

"This is the rare case of a remake being better than the original. A lot of critics are saying that this one actually is a better film than that original. This is probably your best bet of the movies that are opening this weekend."

Matt is not a fan of "Endless Love" and neither are the critics.

"They got the Endless part right...this one is bland...you've got a really good supporting cast in this one too...but your leads, they're kinda bland here...and where this movie falls apart is that it's not nearly as campy as it should be, they kinda dial everything back and it's boring."

Colin Farrell stars in "Winter's Tale", a movie that's coming in under the radar. Matt says there's a reason for that.

"The movie is kind of a mess according to critics...I think it's one of those movies that's kinda so bad it's good and kinda worth seeing. If you have the choice of seeing this or "Endless Love" with your significant other tonight (Valentine's Day)...pick this one because it's more fun."
