Police: 12 catalytic converter thefts in South Side neighborhoods

Police are investigating 12 catalytic converter thefts recently reported in four South Side neighborhoods.

The thieves are mostly targeting small to mid-size SUVs, Area South detectives said in a community alert.

Once removed from vehicles, the catalytic converters are usually taken to junkyards and sold for several hundred dollars, the alert said.

At least 12 catalytic converter thefts have been reported since Jan. 24 in the Washington Heights, Roseland, Auburn Gresham and Morgan Park neighborhoods.

Dates and locations of the thefts include:

  • Jan. 24 in the 1800 block of West 87th Street
  • Feb. 3 in the 9400 block of South Parnell Avenue
  • Feb. 4 in the 11700 block of South Hale Avenue
  • Feb. 5 in the 10500 and 11200 blocks of South Parnell Avenue
  • Feb. 6 in the 9400 block of South Union Avenue, the 9700 block of South Morgan Avenue and the 10100 block of South Eberhart Avenue
  • Feb. 7 in the 10200 block of South Vernon Avenue, the 9900 block of South Perry Avenue, the 9300 block of South Emerald Avenue and the 600 block of West 100th Place

Police are urging neighbors to report any suspicious people or activity, pay attention to people loitering nearby and tell neighbors about the thefts, the alert said.

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call Area South detectives at (312) 747-8273.
