CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man charged with shooting a teen as he shoveled snow last week on the Near West Side was ordered held without bond Sunday, the Sun-Times reports.

Devon McCauley, 22, of the 1200 block of West 14th Street, was charged with one count of first-degree murder for the Feb. 9 shooting in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street, Chicago Police said.

Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered MacCauley held without bond at a hearing Sunday.

Ronald Hayes, 17, was shoveling snow with two other people about 4:15 p.m. when McCauley allegedly walked to that side of the street and shot him in the head, according to court records.

Hayes, of the 1300 block of West Washburne Avenue, died at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Authorities didn't talk about the motive in the slaying.

Both witnesses knew McCauley and were able to identify him as the alleged shooter, court records show. A video also caught McCauley on the other side of the street just before the attack.

"He was shoveling snow. He was doing a good deed," Hayes' mother Cathy Booker told Homicide Watch Chicago.

"He was a good kid, he loved his family, loved basketball" Booker said. "He was gonna make his mama to prom."
