Fully Guaranteed UFC Contracts? MMA Legend Weighs In

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES – Mixed martial arts legend, Dan Henderson sat down with Fox 11 Cage Talk host James Koh to discuss his upcoming bout versus Mauricio Rua, testosterone replacement therapy and explored the idea that fully guaranteed contracts in the UFC could help promote fighters from playing it "safe" in fights.

Twenty of the organization's last 24 fights, or almost 85 percent, have gone to decision.  Fighters who lose can be cut by the UFC regardless of how many fights remain on his or her contract.

"A lot of up-and-coming guys, if they lose, they get cut and so they play it safe and that makes it less exciting," Henderson said.

When asked if he felt that shorter, but fully guaranteed contracts would help promote more exciting fights, Henderson agreed that would help but also said such an arrangement would be difficult.

"I would love to see more guaranteed contracts but you can't do that," Henderson said. "You don't know how somebody is going to perform year after year or fight after fight."

Henderson is currently preparing for his March 23rd rematch versus Mauricio "Shogun" Rua that will air on Fox Sports 1.

"I could have finished him, I didn't, but felt like I should have," Henderson said. "He's really hard headed and hard to finish. I'm going to try to finish him this time but I'm expecting to go five rounds."

At 43 years old, Henderson recently just signed a six-fight extension to stay with the UFC and says there are still a number of interesting matchups that exist in both the middleweight division and at light heavyweight.  Specifically, the longtime Temecula resident still wants a crack at the current 205-pound champion.

"I'd like to fight Jon Jones and just see how the old man does," Henderson said.

Henderson also said he would also be open to a rematch versus Anderson Silva if the former champion were to return.

"There's a few of those fights out there for me, for sure, that would be a big draw," Henderson said.

On the hot topic of TRT exemptions? Henderson says he'd like to see more Olympic-style drug testing.

"It (TRT) definitely can be abused fairly easily," Henderson said.  "I've been saying it for years now, but they should really implement random drug testing especially for guys that are asking for exemptions."

It's a particularly strong statement because Henderson, who has been receiving TRT exemptions for years, knows such an arrangement would directly impact him and his training.

"I spent most of my wrestling getting randomly drug tested at all times of the night or morning and I think that's a really great way to nip this abuse in the bud with not just testosterone but anything," Henderson said.

We asked Henderson flat out, is TRT cheating?

"No, I don't think so, you take antibiotics when you get sick and this just happens to be something that you take regularly," Henderson said.
