'Hollywood' heroin in Harlem–Hamptons pipeline

The Hamptons are known for the best of everything, including drugs. Now prosecutors say they've busted a Harlem to Hamptons heroin ring that serviced addicts on Long Island's upscale East End.

The East End Drug Task Force at a press conference laid out the tools of the heroin trade: guns, stacks of cash, scales, electronics and bags of high potency heroin with the brand name "Hollywood" stamped on them. They say addict buyers also came from the north fork and other long island communities.

"There is no community in Suffolk County that is immune from the devastating consequences of heroin," Suffolk D.A. Thomas Spota said.

During the raids, the task force arrested three alleged suppliers from East Harlem and six alleged heroin dealers. They allegedly set up shop in store parking lots and the Tangier Mall, where heavy traffic wouldn't be noticed.

The Hollywood heroin brand was so potent, instead of going for the usual $9 or $10 a bag, dealers could get $15 to $20.

Spota admitted that there will probably be another drug crew that takes this one's place, but officials want to send the message that heroin dealing on the east end is now a very risky business.

Three Nassau County beaches have been closed to bathing due to heavy rainfall. County health officials say storm water runoff can elevate bacterial levels and affect bathing water quality. The three South Shore beaches that were closed Monday are: Hewlett Point Beach; Island Park Beach; and Merrick Estates Civic Association. In addition, Biltmore and Philip Healey beaches in Massapequa remain closed to bathing due to elevated levels of bacteria.
