DPD Chief James Craig responds to death threat investigation

DETROIT (WJBK) -

The FBI is investigating a death threat against Detroit Police Chief James Craig. The threat was made over the Internet by a man believed to be a drug dealer or a gang member. Sunday, Craig spoke out saying, "we will find you."

Craig says it's the first time in his almost 40 years on the job that his life has been threatened. He calls it confirmation that Detroit is on the right track and he won't stop now.

"I want to be there when he's arrested," Craig told Fox 2. "This is America and in America you do not threaten a police chief. This is not a third world country. This is not a place where the community has rolled over and said, 'You know, we're afraid.'"

Fox 2 has learned the threats were made on a social media site with a picture of a gun and the words "We have to clap him out."

Since Craig came to Detroit drug raids are a top priority, officers now boasting an average of 35 drug raids per week and almost half a dozen large scale operations over the last few months. Police say the person who made the threat could be in a gang or part of a large narcotic network.

"This reinforces why we do what we do," Craig said. "The violent predators in this city felt like they ran the city. We're not going to just disrupt this, we're going to dismantle this narcotic network and it will extend beyond the borders of the City of Detroit."

Police are also investigating people who commented on the social media post. The chief did not confirm an increased security detail but he did say he's getting hourly updates. Detroit Police, Michigan State Police, the FBI and even the Detroit Crime Commission are working around the clock to make an arrest.

"We will not back off," Craig said.
