Both sides of Revere casino proposal turn out ahead of vote

REVERE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The battle for votes over a proposed Revere casino was heating up Sunday, with just two days left to go.

On Tuesday, voters in Revere will decide on a proposal by Mohegan Sun to build a casino on property owned by Suffolk Downs.

Those for the casino say it'll save and create thousands of jobs.

"We're doing everything we can right now just to continue to get the facts out to the people - what is at stake for our community?" asked Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo. "4,000 jobs, 2,500 temporary construction jobs, saving 800 to 1,000 jobs at Suffolk Downs."

Revere resident Matilda Ponfardeci was also for bringing the casino to the city.

"I think it's gonna revive our city," she said. "I'm looking forward to the jobs it's gonna offer to the city."

While those against it say they just don't want people coming into their city to gamble.

"A casino is like a Trojan horse. Pretty on the outside but death on the inside," said Father George Szal.

Voters in revere supported a plan for a casino last fall, but the measure failed when East Boston voters rejected it.

"The vote was so quick last time people didn't have a chance to look at both sides of the issue," Szal said.

Mayor Rizzo said he felt confident the measure would pass.

"I feel very confident that come Tuesday they're gonna come out in large numbers like they did back on November 5 and vote favorably for this referendum," he said.

The Revere vote isn't the only milestone for the state's gambling future this week. On Friday, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission will award the only slots parlor license in the state.

If supporters do win out on Tuesday, Revere will next go up against Everett for a casino license in this part of the state.
