MassDOT officials consider private partnership for third Cape Cod bridge

Posted: Updated:

SAGAMORE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- State transportation officials joined together Monday to discuss a plan to build another bridge across the Cape Cod Canal that would require travelers to pay a toll.

MassDOT officials are considering a partnership with a private business to build the bridge, which would be built adjacent to the Sagamore. Banking and legal advisors are expected to be selected in April and bids for the project are expected to take place in the fall.

Supporters say travelers will be able to choose whether or not the use the bridge. They add that the extra bridge would provide an alternative when traffic is restricted on the other bridges.

The bridge, which would be built adjacent to the Sagamore Bridge, would be the largest transportation project on the Cape since the Sagamore and Bourne bridges were built 80 years ago, reports Cape Cod Times. In December 2013, the proposal was projected to cost $320 million.

A Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokesperson told the Times the new bridge and the Sagamore would each carry one direction of travel.
