Researchers Suggest 'Death Test' Could Predict Mortality

MYFOXNY.COM - You now have a group of researchers in Finland to thank for what could soon be the most difficult test you ever take: one that determines if you'll be alive or dead within five years.

Dr. Monsoor Khan, chairman of emergency medicine at Staten Island's Richmond University Medical Center, explains that researchers took blood samples from more than 17,000 people in good general health. They tested the blood for more than 100 chemicals found in your body, known as biomarkers. Then five years later, the researchers compared the blood samples of those still alive to those not so fortunate.

"People with higher levels of these biomarkers, have a higher chance of dying," he told FOX 5 -WNYW.

However, Khan, who was not involved in the study, says there are some major problems with what has been dubbed the "death test." He says the researchers don't really point out what the people tracked died from.

"They don't really point out what we're going to target," said Khan. "So are you going to die from cardiovascular disease? Is that what we're going to be targeting? Are you going to die from cancer? ... So it doesn't really help us figure out what we're supposed to be doing with this information."

He also says he is skeptical because four of the researchers also happen to own the company that ran the study. The bottom line, Dr. Khan is skeptical.
