Boston Police announce free self-defense class in East Boston

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON ( -- As a response to the spate of recent attacks against women in East Boston, Boston Police have announced a free self-defense program to community members in the neighborhood.

The class, called "Street Smarts: Reducing Your Odds of Becoming a Victim," will be taught by Sgt. Gary Eblan of the Boston Police Academy.

Eblan will talk about how an assailant chooses a victim, when and where an attack is likely to occur, and how people can make themselves less of a noticeable target. Participants will also be able to put together their own plan to reduce the odds of becoming a victim of an attack.

The free class will take place Wednesday, March 5, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at  the BCYF Paris Street Community Center at 112 Paris St.
