ST CLAIR SHORES, Mich. -- The crew of a U.S. Coast Guard cutter that rescued a dog from the ice on Lake St. Clair is giving the animal an appropriate name: "Lucky."

The Coast Guard says the crew of the 140-foot Bristol Bay on Monday hoisted the dog aboard and gave it food and care before taking it to an animal shelter.

Chief Petty Officer Alan Haraf says the Detroit-based Bristol Bay had been heading to help another vessel stuck in ice that day. Haraf said three crew members suited up in weather-resistant gear and left the ship to help the dog.

Haraf says the dog was "cold, weak and tired" and may have been on the ice for days. It had a harness and collar but no identifying tag.

The dog was taken inside the ship, where it was provided food and first aid before being transferred to an area animal shelter for further care.

This wasn't the crews first dog rescue. They say another stranded dog was rescued back in March 2011.
