DOJ Sues Philadelphia School District Over Grooming Policy

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the Philadelphia School District.

The case is about a school police officer and a 2010 district rule that prevents employees from having beards longer than a quarter of an inch.

The longtime employee says he was reprimanded after refusing to comply with that rule because of his Islamic faith.

Now, government lawyers say that rule falls under religious discrimination.

The school district has not commented.
