National Cereal Day

Posted: Updated:

Grab your milk and spoon-- today is national cereal day!

Whether you like it crunchy, sweet or full of fiber-- cold cereal is still one of the most popular breakfast foods in America.

50% of us start our days with cereal like "Cheerios".

"Cheerios" first hit shelves in 1941 and has been a staple ever since.

But the box form back them may have been difficult to identify, because it was originally called "Cheeri-Oats."

The name was changed in 1945 to what we know today as "Cheerios."

The very first cereal ever was originally named "Granula" and was invented right here in the United States in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson.

It was mostly bran and apparently it was so hard that it had to be soaked overnight before it could be eaten.

According to the book "Cerealizing America", Americans consume 101 pounds or 160 bowls of cereal per person every year!

Some of that is "lucky charms" which was invented in 1963 by General Mills.

The cereal with the marshmallow shapes hasn't always looked the same, but one thing has remained unchanged is the pink heart marshmallow.

It is the only one that hasn't changed in shape or color.
