BOSTON ( -- A 30-year-old Brockton man is facing charges after Boston police allege he sped off after hitting a pedestrian on Tremont Street.

A Boston police officer was near the Under Bar on Tremont Street at about 2 a.m. Friday when he noticed security personnel banging on the window of a silver SUV in an attempt to stop the driver. The driver fled, passing through a red light.

Witnesses told police the driver hit a pedestrian while pulling a U-turn at a high rate of speed. The officer at the scene put out a description of the car and stayed with the victim.

Boston police spotted the car driving down Herald Street toward the I-93S expressway. They say the SUV hit several guard rails before exiting the expressway at Morrissey Boulevard. The driver got out of the car after hitting a median and blowing out a tire.

Investigators claim the suspect, identified as Kerrie Benton, could not speak and vomited during the booking process. Benton was evaluated by EMS and transported to a local hospital due to apparent intoxication.

Benton is charged with operating a motor vehicle after license suspended/revoked, driving to endanger, failure to stop for police, leaving the scene of an accident: personal injury, and operating under the influence of alcohol.

The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries in the incident.
