Pembroke man arrested on 6th OUI charge

Posted: Updated:

HINGHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A Pembroke man was arrested for the sixth time on the charge of operating under the influence Friday.

At around 10:02 p.m., an officer attempted to pull a driver over because the front license plate on his truck was missing. The driver braked briefly, and then accelerated at a high rate of speed, according to police. The driver then pulled into a driveway and stopped. The officer said he noticed that the driver had slow and slurred speech and his eyes were red and glassy.

The driver, who was wearing gloves, placed his right hand where the officer could not see it and refused to move it despite the officer's request. The officer then asked the driver to step out of the truck. The driver was swaying from side to side and smelled of alcohol. However, he denied that he had been drinking and refused a field sobriety test.

The driver's license was suspended due to three violations and the license plate on his truck was listed to a different car.

John H. Sweezey, 55, of Pembroke, was arrested on charges of OUI (alcohol) 5th or subsequent offense, operating after license suspension (subsequent offense), operating to endanger, uninsured vehicle, attaching license plates, driving with suspended registration, driving with an open container of alcohol, failure to display license plate (front), no registration in possession, and seat belt violation.

His prior OUI charges were in 1983 and 1984.

Sweezey was held on $1,000.00 cash bail and will be arraigned Monday, March 10, at Hingham District Court.
