Callahan Tunnel reopens days ahead of schedule

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The refurbished Callahan Tunnel reopened Monday after a months-long closing.

Commuters were able to pass through the tunnel at 5 a.m. for the first time in three months.

The tunnel connects downtown to East Boston and Logan International Airport. It was closed since Dec. 27 as contractors worked around the clock on repairs.

The contractor is set to receive a $140,000 bonus for finishing the project two days early. The company would have been fined $70,000 for every day the project was delayed.

While the tunnel is back open, the work is not finished just yet. Crews will still conduct some repairs overnight and on weekends.

According to the Boston Herald, the work is also coming in about $10 million below budget.

MassDOT says if the tunnel remained open during construction, work would have continued for at least another year.
