The wife of William Clay Ford will take over his controlling interest in the Detroit Lions after the longtime owner's death.

The Lions announced Monday that Ford's interest in the team passes to Martha Ford.

"Pursuant to long-established succession plans, Mr. Ford's controlling interest in the Lions passes to Mrs. Martha Ford," team officials said in a statement. "She and her four children will continue to be involved in the ownership of the franchise, as they have during Mr. Ford's tenure."

William Clay Ford, Jr. will remain vice chairman.

Detroit Lions owner William Clay Ford has died of pneumonia on Sunday at age 88.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says the grandson of auto pioneer Henry Ford was one of his struggling city's biggest boosters.

Duggan says William Clay Ford's dedication to Detroit "was never more evident than ... with his decision to move the Detroit Lions back downtown."
