(WJBK) -

Detroit's National Action Network is expected to head to Lansing Tuesday to lobby for lawmakers to repeal the state's stand-your-ground law, and to start a petition drive to put it on the November ballot.

"We will make sure that on this November ballot that we get the opportunity to strike a blow for justice for Trayvon Martin, to strike a blow for justice for Renisha McBride," says Rev. Charles Williams of the Detroit National Action Network.

But this plan to repeal Michigan's version of the stand-your-ground law is not sitting well with many gun owners, especially those who have had to use them in self defense.

For example is Darrell Standberry.

"If it wasn't for stand-your-ground law, right now I would be in jail," he says.

He shot and killed a man who pulled a gun on him while stealing his car.

"I turned back and looked and he was already in the driver's seat of my vehicle. ... He turned around and looked and [saw] that I was still standing there, and that's when he reached in his pocket to pull out his weapon, and I pulled out my weapon and I fired one shot," says Standberry.

"We believe in the second amendment. We believe in defending yourself. ... What we do not believe is in a law that gives you a license not to walk away," says Rev. Williams.

That's the key element of the law - not having to retreat when you feel your life is in immediate danger.

"To me, it comes down to a basic Second Amendment right and stand your ground, as far as I'm concerned, is already covered under that," says Pete Letkemann, a supporter of the law.
