Drexel University students are mourning the death of one of their classmates, although the exact cause of her death has not been determined, officials say.
Stephanie Ross was found unresponsive by her Phi Mu (Beta Tau) housemates on Monday.
The mechanical engineering sophomore was rushed to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center before she was pronounced dead.
"While the cause of death has not yet been determined, the University is treating this as a suspected case of meningitis and working closely with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health to take all necessary precautions," Drexel officials said in a statement issued Tuesday.
For those who were in close contact with Ross, prophylactic antibiotics are being made available through the University's Student Health Center, which is located at 3401 Market Street.
The university is also offering counseling services to all students affected by the tragic loss of their colleague.
The Counseling Center can be reached at 215-895-1415, or at 215-416-3337 outside of regular business hours. The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life is also offering services to those who are affected by this tragic event. Students who feel they may have symptoms of meningitis should call the Student Health Center at 215-220-4700.
