U.S. Rep. John Dingell hospitalized, undergoes surgery

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (WJBK) -- U.S. Rep. John Dingell has undergone a procedure to correct an abnormal heart rhythm.

Henry Ford Hospital says the minimally invasive procedure was performed Thursday in Detroit to correct a condition called atrial flutter.

In a statement, the hospital says the 87-year-old Dearborn Democrat "is in good spirits, resting comfortably and is expected to be released" Friday.

Dingell spokesman Christopher Schuler says the congressman "plans to return to work as Congress reconvenes" March 24 and will have a light workload during the time in between. The hospital says Dingell will continue on a medication regimen of blood thinners and arrhythmia medications.

Dingell announced last month he will retire at the end of his term.

Dingell entered Congress as a 29-year-old back in 1955 and has represented Michigan's 12th District ever since. On June 7, 2013, Dingell became the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history.

Dingell's wife, Debbie, is running for his Detroit-area seat.
