Americans love to pamper their pets (of course)

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Some say pet owners are a little sick in the head these days. Michael Amador, the manager at Canine Styles, tells us what's "in" for next fall already for pampered pooches. Amador tells us some four legged friends are wagging their way in here to get some of that color on their nails, saying some canine owner customers are spending up to $1,200 a year on grooming alone.

The American Pet Products Association says our country spent $56 billion last year alone on their favorite friends -- roughly the gross domestic product for Ecuador and the Dominican Republic combined.

Animal Medical Center's Dr. Ann Hohenhaus says it is OK to pamper pets because they're like family members.

But, Miguel Rodriguez, an Iraq War veteran who handled bomb-sniffing dogs (and now mine), says our dogs will be happier, believe it or not, if you treat them like dogs.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
