Man says he shot neighbor's dog in self defense

Richmond, Macomb County MI -

A northern Macomb County man makes a desperate call to 9-1-1 telling the dispatcher he was being attacked by a dog. While on the phone, the man shot the dog but the dog survived.

Fox 2 obtained the 9-1-1 call that captured the moment Luigi Coscione can not stop thinking about. The moment he shot his neighbor's dog. The dog can be heard barking in the background as he screams into the phone, "You better get the dog or I'm gonna shoot him!"

It happened Thursday afternoon as Luigi was getting his trash. The rottweiler/pit bull mix broke its chain and came after him. Luigi claims the dog's owner was watching.

"She said don't worry he won't do nothing," he told Fox 2. "I said ma'am this dog is ready to kill me."

Luigi says it was not the first time he's been harassed by the neighbors' unleashed dogs. He fears for the safety of his grandchildren and says he doesn't feel safe in his own yard. He started carrying a revolver whenever he was outside incase anything happened. Thursday, something did.

He says he didn't have a choice, he had to pull the trigger and he feels badly for the dog which was injured but survived. The dog's owner was not available for comment but we're told the family pet is expected to recover. It appears unlikely Luigi will face any charges; no word on whether the dog's owner is also in the clear. The chief animal control officer says the shooting should remind dog owners to make sure pets are licensed and on a leash.
