Howell High School students reprimanded for KKK-referenced tweet

High school officials in Howell say they've reprimanded students involved in posting racist messages on Twitter after the school's nearly all-white basketball team defeated a team with black and white players.
 
Tom Gould from Howell Public Schools says four or five students tweeted messages after Howell beat Grand Blanc on Thursday beat Grand Blanc 54-49 in a Class A regional final at Linden High School. The messages made reference to Howell's team being white and included a Ku Klux Klan reference.

Some of the messages read:

"Not only did we beat Grand Blanc but we're all white. Howell's the definite winner tonight."

"All hail white power. #hitlerismydad".

But this tweet stood out among the crowd:

"Tonight was probably one of the most [racist] nights of my life. I heard so many slurs and expressions. I also said a few things..."

The tweets in question were reported to administrators by peers.

Gould tells FOX 2's Andrea Isom corrective action has been taken against the students. Because of school policy and student privacy the action taken could not be elaborated upon, but Gould says the action was stern. He also said the students still attend the school.

One student tells Isom she heard the kids are not allowed to go to any more sporting events. The Detroit News and WHMI-FM reported the students involved weren't affiliated with the school's basketball program. Howell next plays Tuesday.
 
Grand Blanc Schools Superintendent Norman Abdella says he believes that Howell administrators will appropriately handle the situation.

Gould says the students were apologetic. One has apologized on Twitter saying, "I know that [wasn't] a smart thing to say last night, emotions ran high and I didn't mean it. To all the GB I'm really genuinely sorry."
