Rejoice: It's the first day of spring!

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Spring began today at 12:57 p.m. with the vernal equinox.

This season brings increasing daylight, warmer temperatures and soon budding flowers.

The word equinox derives from the Latin words meaning "equal night." Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the sun rises and sets due east and west.

At the equinoxes, the tilt of earth relative to the sun is zero, which means that earth's axis neither points toward nor away from the sun.

So somebody tell the polar vortex wizard -- to STAND DOWN!

It'll be breezy for much of today as low pressure continues to lift off to the northeast. After a cloudy morning we should week out partly sunny skies by late today.

Our weekend chance for snow is continuing to look less and less. Rain should break out Friday evening and we may see some flakes mix in overnight, but we're not expecting much if any in terms of accumulation.

Colder air works in over the weekend and looks to stick around through next week.

Today: It will remain mostly cloudy tonight with a few scattered flurries. Low near 24.

Friday: Mix of sun and clouds with a high in the mid-40s.

Weekend: Saturday is cooler under mostly cloudy skies. You'll see a few morning flurries. High 42. Sunday is a cold day even with the sunshine - high 32.
