Gov. Quinn: Rauner & `Mr. Burns` love bragging about their millions

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Gov. Pat Quinn is bringing the heat towards his election opponent Bruce Rauner in ads.

At the State Capitol Thursday, House Speaker Michael Madigan said there was strong support among Democrats in the General Assembly for a new surtax on millionaires. He mocked the notion that any of the 13,675 Illinoisans making more than a million dollars a year might flee.

"If they're in Illinois today, they're probably so much in love with Illinois that they're not gonna' leave," said Madigan.

Critics focused on a suggestion in Madigan's press release that Illinois' "temporary" income tax increase will not begin to expire next January as promised.

"Madigan is...hoping taxpayers are too blinded by his class warfare political play to notice," said the Illinois Policy Institute.

As the battle brewed in Springfield, Illinois, Gov. Quinn's campaign focused on a wealthy villain from a cartoon Springfield. An Internet video that was later pulled down because of FOX which produces the Simpsons for copyright reasons compared the Simpsons' C. Montgomery Burns to Bruce Rauner, the Republican nominee for governor.

"Excellent! Billionaire Bruce has nine homes and took in $53 million in 2012 alone," the web ad stated.

"Looks like Pat Quinn is running his campaign as poorly and irresponsibly as he runs state government," responded a spokesman for the Rauner campaign.

For his part, Madigan insisted his millionaire's surtax proposal was not designed to create political problems for Rauner. The House Speaker, a lawyer specializing in property tax appeals by corporations, revealed that he would be hit by the surtax.

"Do I make a million dollars a year? To answer your question, in a good year, I would be subject to this," Madigan added.

The Quinn campaign said the purpose behind the ad is to compare Rauner and the cartoon character's "affinity for bragging about their millions."
